"In 1997 we began stamping one pound paper bags in our coffeehouse. We stamped as we thought that we could never sell enough coffee to warrant ordering labels. Simple kraft tin-tie paper bags with black ink stamps. The reaction was incredible. We realized that private labeled coffee gave us immediate merit. Private labeled coffee put us a step above our competition; just having it on the shelves seemed to boost drink sales as well as customer loyalty. We continued stamping bags despite low sales due to the obvious customer loyalty that resulted. It took us a year to see sales actually reach an acceptable level of 20 pounds a week. Ten years later we average 75lb a week for a retial item that nets an average of 4.00/lb profit. Find another retail item that fits on your shelves that gives you that sort of net and such small a footprint as well as customer loyalty. The success of our private label program was customer loyalty, brand definition and drink sales; even if private label had to be a loss leader (which it wasn't) it was well worth the investment."
